there are john cameron lessons taking place on the following dates: 19th July, 2nd and 16th August. If any members would like to have either a flatwork or jumping lesson with john please contact Marie Brown
Sunday 14th November saw the Area Winter Team Dressage Qualifier take place at Sandyflat. This was WofS second year hosting this prestigious competition. Once again the arrangements ran smoothly, thanks to the hardwork of the committee, Wofs members and Area representitives, namely,
Chief Steward Nesta Gilliland
Chief Scorer Linda Allen
Car Park Steward and Assistant Peter and Jennifer Rentoul
Warm Up Ring Steward Isabel Thomson
Stewards Marie and Gordon Brown
Committee Members June Craig, Marie, Rosie Spike, Gillian Sleight & Liz,Lorna and Moira Watson
WofS Club Members Kathleen and Eileen Diamond, Nicola Johnston, Karen Young
A huge thanks to our Judges without whom the competition could not have taken place, The Hon. Heather Galbraith, Joy MacLean, Lady Fergusson and Glenys McKee, and to their Writers who were not club members.
To Robert Muirhead of Leven First Aid, thanks for your attendance and happily your services were not required!
Many thanks to those who set up and dismantled the arenas, and the RDA staff who supplied us all with much needed refreshment!
Well done to all competitors and many congratulations to the prizewinners. The Team results are as follows:
1st Ettrick Forrest
2nd South Lammermuir 'A'
4th Kilmacolm and Kilallan 'A'
6th Kilmacolm and Kilallan 'B'
Thanks to all who came along to the A.G.M and put forward some valuable and useful points. A new (and somewhat familiar) committee has been voted in with a couple of welcome additions. The first meeting is in early December so if there are any points you want brought up, please let a committee member know or email email@example.com.
It has been a disappointing year in respect to the members' uptake of lessons with quite a few having to be cancelled and the Members' show being poorly attended. With this in mind, it was decided not to hold an Open show of any description.
For this coming year, we are hopeful that the attendance will pick up again. We appreciate that times are difficult, especially when it snows and the feed bills rocket!! The committee is trying to keep lessons value for money, however as with everything, costs are increasing, but for the moment, there are no plans to increase the cost of a lesson.
During the winter, it is becoming increasingly difficult to get indoor lessons at Sandyflat, however other venues such as Ingliston and Kingsbarn are too expensive and others in the district have their own problems e.g poor parking and lightning. Any suggestions are welcome and also for alternative instructors.
We would also like to hold a Showing show in late spring/early summer and a dressage show during the summer. If there are enough volunteers, a Showjumping event would be considered but Liz and the committee cannot and will not man-handle the jumps by themselves.
Presentation of the trophys
During the year, a few members have been out and about at the lessons and various competitions, and have in turn filled in their Points card, notching up a fair number of points.
The June Craig Shield for the most successful competitor in any disipline. Only one point seperated the top two, with Karen Young being the runner up to Gillian Sleight and Cobbler's Dream.
The Club Members' Trophy for the member who gained the most points by attending lessons and volunteering at WofS events. Runner up is Gillian Sleight and the winner is Lorna Watson.
The Aileen Sweeney Cup for Most Improved Rider is Lorna Watson with Ceilidh.
We have already started the 2011 season with a bang by hosting the Riding Club Area 1 Winter Team Dressage Qualifier. The WofS team comprising of Lorna Watson and Ceilidh, Karen Young and Allys Blue Skye, Moira Watson and Copper Berry, and Gillian Sleight and Cobbler's Dream didn't get a place this year but congratulations go to Karen for getting 4th in her arena.
Unfortunately, plans to send a team to the Winter Showjumping fell through due to 2 members being ineligible having been successful in British Eventing, and others not having valid Flu vaccinations. However, hopefully if there is the same interest again, we shall enter teams for summer competitions. If you are interested in being a team member, contact Liz who will pass on your name to Marie, who is our Chef d'Equipe, and either will explain about the general criteria for competing at Area level. A form will accompany your next newsletter explaining in detail.
Hoping to see you at lessons during the Christmas holidays. Your new membership card will be sent to you as soon as Stoneleigh send them out (past members have the same number apart from the 2nd digit, which now becomes a '1'). Those of you who wish a Points card for 2011, please let Liz know and remember it started on 1st October 2010
Meanwhile, can the committee wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Hi everybody. Marie has now confirmed instructors for all the dates this year- they are Ailsa Gilchrist, John Cameron and Aileen Craig. Please fill out the booking form and either email to email@example.com or post to Marie. Non WofS members are welcome as long as you are a member of another affiliated Riding Club (cards will be asked for). Hope to see many of you there! Click here for booking form
We have Aileen booked for a couple of dates now- Monday 3rd May 11-2pm, Tuesday 8th June 6-9pm and Tuesday 20th July 6-9pm.The lessons are gridwork and jumping, however having her for the 3 hours means we can group by ability so if you are not that confident or have a young/novice horse, please do feel that you can participate! Let Marie know 2 weeks in advance please and note that the lessons will be limited to 4 places per lesson.
Spring and Summer Lesson dates have now been confirmed at Sandyflat. We are however waiting on instructors to be confirmed for some of those dates later on in the year. See Events page for details and contact marie by email if you wish to book.
The Club has been asked to host the Qualifier for 2010 again to which the Committee have said yes since it was such a success in November. It could not have been so without all the volunteers we had - we will be asking again for this November and also hope to have teams entered since the Seniors did so well last time out!
To all our past, present and future members, we hope that you have a Merry Christmas and a successful, happy New Year!
With weather being the way it is, please keep checking in as some of the lessons may have to be cancelled.
The new committee is meeting for the first time next week, Thursday 26th, so if anyone would like to be co-opted on or has anything they would like to be discussed, contact Liz via the email.

WofS is hosting this years Area 1 Winter Dressage Team Qualifier at RDA Sandyflat on Sunday 15th November 2009. As we speak, June is organising 4 judges and Liz has asked Linda Allan to be Chief Scorer but we will be expecting WofS members to volunteer to steward, write and generally help with the running of the competition. So those of you who have already kindly put your names forward in the subscription form, expect a phone call soon!! We will also be hoping to put forward at least one Senior and a Junior team so keep practicing your flatwork and come along to Ailsa's final lesson of the season (20th August) for any helpful pointers.
Most of you have probably received the newsletter, however here it is to download anyway! Click here to download
We are happy to report that there has been a good turnout for the Ailsa and Linda lessons this month even although a couple had to unfortuneately pull out at the last minute -hopefully we will see you at the next. The remaining members have enjoyed these lessons whilst at the same time finding them quite productive.
It certainly shows that the lessons are paying off for some of our members. Congratulations to Gillian Sleight and Cobbler's Dream who were 1st in the Intro at Eglinton, and to Moira Watson on Copper Berry who were 2nd in the Pre-Novice at the same event. Well done girls!!
We are having a Member's Show, which to qualify for the Club Cup involves a Dressage competition (where your Tack and Turnout will be marked immediately before your test) and a round of Showjumping -you choose your height. You can do a second round of jumps if desired at a higher height! This day is aimed at letting members get to know each other, build confidence and above all else have some fun!!
The Handy Pony proved popular last year however due to it being time-consuming to set-up, we will only run it if there is sufficient interest.
Further details will be provided in Newsletter coming to you soon, however if you could let Liz Watson (01360 620 490) know of your interest it would be greatly appreciated.
We have several lessons planned for this summer. If you are interested please fill out the booking form and send to Marie Brown at Back O'Hill Farm, Back O'Hill Road, Torrance G64 4DR or email westofscot.co.uk. The Aileen Craig and Linda Lucey lessons must be prepaid so please send an cheque to confirm your booking with them. Click here for booking form
